Ukranian colors for a bright day

Once upon a time…well, two and a half centuries ago, to be more precise, in a little village in Ukraine called Petrykivka, was born a type of painting. The vibrant Petrykivka paintings which take their name from their birthplace, were created by home dwellers who used paint brushes made of cat-fur to paint their walls. The brightest colors of nature were brought into homes, with the hope that they bring with them gaiety and high spirits. Homeowners competed, the art was bequeathed from one generation to the next, and the art form flourished.

Today Petrykivka paintings adorn walls and museums across the world. They are painted on all kinds of surfaces - musical instruments, plates and vessels and pretty much any surface one can imagine. Bright, happy notes to set one’s spirits soaring…

Courting Copper

The allure of the red metal. Copper. From the ancient Egyptians to the the modern day fashionista, copper holds an irreverent charm over other metals. Red, but not quite. Easily available, but not quite. Could be used aplenty, but not quite. In keeping with our summer theme, we decided to scourge the internet to find you a few pretty, whimsical things that are all copper. So here some pretty little things that we think you could score when you are in the mood for courting copper.

A whimsical little copper beaked scissor would make a perfect gift for the creative friend

Art Inspirations: Nilofer Suleman's Capital Talkies

Wednesdays are hard. The next two days look disastrously difficult to overcome. So on days as these, humor is our best friend!
Presenting our inspiration for the day. Indian painter/muralist Nilofer Suleman’s paintings combine kitsch, old-warm charm, and small-town India replete with its “out-there” characters, innuendo-laced (and misspelled!) English words, and an amazing contradiction of movement in the stillness of time-stamp.

Today we smile at Capitol Talkies. In front of a kitschy village theater playing a dubious “Tarzan and the Huntress”  - gossipy old ladies, the man with the roving eye, the preening girls shooting a look at the admirer…many stories abound! And we always love a good story.

Happy Wednesday!

The Allure of Decay

We start the weekend early with an article from The Huffington Post.
German photographer Christian Richter spends his time travelling across Europe, capturing old decaying buildings with his camera. The textures, colors, angles, and moods tell tales of time…of lives lived in glory, of stories that were created in these spaces, and of unanswered questions galore. Surreal compositions and a keen artistic eye, indeed.

Read, no, feast your eyes on the full article here and look into the artists's full portfolio of work here.
Happy Weekend everyone!
